CAMPHILL VILLAGE KIMBERTON HILLS DAIRY, KIMBERTON PA

(6.5 miles)

This certified organic, biodynamic raw dairy is part of Camphill Village, an intentional community for adults with developmental disabilities. About 10 farmers tend to the dairy, which includes villagers (adults with developmental disabilities) and coworkers (volunteers and long-term volunteer residents).

Their herd of roughly 40 milk cows are fed on pasture from April through November. In the winter, the cows are fed grass-based silage, supplemented with essential minerals. No grain or soy products are ever consumed.

The dairy follows holistic principles, for the herd, the land, as well as the staff. For example, they cut down to once a day milking, for it allowed them to be able to manage the land in a sustainable way, while the cows ate and relaxed the rest of the day. With once a day milking, the mothers raise their calves instead of humans bottle feeding them. The calves can run with the herd and learn from them. Being 100% grass fed, it is important to allow the cows access to pasture for as long as possible.

You will see the rich golden yellow hue, and the thick layer of cream on top. That color comes from the beta-carotene in grass (the same pigment that makes carrots orange). It’s the richest, most nutritious raw milk in our region, and we are lucky to have access to this incredible product.
